Currently, Mark serves as an active member of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was Chair of the Board from 2008-2010. In 2018, Mark was selected to be one of 12 directors to the new Cedars-Sinai Health System Board, which is charged with governing the regional hospital network that Cedars-Sinai is developing.
From 2005 to 2017, Mark served on the Board of Trustees of The J. Paul Getty Trust, where he was named Chair of its Investment Committee and later Chair of the Board (2010-2015). Under Mark’s leadership, the Trust’s investment assets grew while major new art acquisitions were made, the current CEO was recruited, and internal governance issues and various international restitution claims for antiquities were all amicably resolved.
In the for-profit world, Mark is the Founder and President of ReMY Investors & Consultants, Inc. which has offered investment advisory services to ultra-high net worth families since 1993. Prior to founding ReMY, Mark held numerous executive positions in various Shamrock Companies (the investment entity for the Roy Disney Family). Through Shamrock and ReMY, Mark has overseen public and private investments for more than 40 years.
In the course of a long and varied business career, Mark has had operating leadership positions in energy, retailing, pharmaceuticals and real estate. In energy, for more than 20 years, Mark has been the Executive Chairman of Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc., a leading oil services firm, and from that vantage point has helped lead the domestic energy revolution that provided the U.S. with energy independence.
Mark graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate University where he earned his A.B. degree in Philosophy. He earned his J.D. degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and graduated Order of the Coif. In 2009, Mark established a sizable yearly endowed prize at Colgate University for great undergraduate teaching, named in honor of his favorite philosophy professor.
