Maria leads the quantum machine learning research team at Xanadu, a Toronto-based quantum computing company. She co-authored a book as well as many papers on the topic of how quantum computers can be used for machine learning, and is one of the original developers of the PennyLane software framework for quantum differentiable programming.

Maria received her PhD degree in physics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa in 2017, but also holds a postgraduate degree in political science and still spends some of her time understanding the use of machine learning tools for social sciences research.
